Perfume
What is niche perfume, and why it smells like nothing you have worn
Niche perfume is made by houses whose main business is fragrance, in small batches, with bolder notes than designer perfume. Here is how to tell the difference.

In short
Niche perfume is perfume made by houses whose main business is fragrance, sold in a small number of places and built around the scent rather than a mass audience. A designer perfume is a fragrance made under a fashion brand, planned for millions of bottles. Niche houses make fewer bottles, use bolder notes and often limit their batches.
Niche and designer, side by side
A designer perfume carries the name of a fashion house and is sold everywhere the brand is sold: department stores, airports, online retailers. It is usually developed to please the widest possible audience, tested on large panels and launched in volumes that run into the millions.
A niche perfume comes from a house that exists for fragrance. Its bottles are sold in a few boutiques or directly, its launches are smaller, and its perfumers can take risks a mass launch cannot: notes like smoke, leather, sweat, earth or fruit gone too far.
Why niche perfume smells different
Niche perfume smells different because it does not have to be liked by everyone. A scent that half of a test panel finds strange would never reach an airport shelf; for a niche house it can be the whole point.
Niche perfume also tends to show its raw materials more clearly. Where a designer scent blends notes into one smooth impression, a niche fragrance often lets you smell each part: the ash, the salt, the leaf, the resin.
Is niche perfume worth the price?
Niche perfume costs more because it is made in smaller quantities and often at a higher concentration. An eau de parfum usually holds a higher share of perfume oil than an eau de toilette, commonly quoted around 15 to 20 per cent against 5 to 15, although there is no official standard.
Whether it is worth it depends on what you want from a perfume. If you want something pleasant that many people wear, designer perfume does that well. If you want a scent that is yours, that people ask about and rarely recognise, niche is where to look.
How to choose a niche perfume
The best way to choose a niche perfume is to read the notes and the story before you smell it. A niche house tells you what it was trying to capture; if the story interests you, the scent usually will too.
Try it on skin, not on paper, and wait at least an hour. The opening of a niche perfume is often its loudest part; the heart and the base are what you will live with.
Posh Stink as a niche perfume house
Posh Stink is a niche perfume house in London built on the most extreme version of these rules: one batch a year, 300 numbered bottles per fragrance, no restock and no shop.
Its four fragrances follow the seasons, with notes chosen to be remembered: volcanic ash, monkey-spit coffee, cannabis leaf and frog skin.
Niche is not a price. It is a decision to smell of something.
