Smoky Magma by Posh Stink: a 100 ml bottle of eau de parfum photographed in the colour of its season

In short

Smoky Magma is the summer fragrance of Posh Stink, a smoky perfume built around volcanic heat. It opens with volcanic ash, black lava salt and pink pepper, moves to a heart of sulphur spring, hot basalt and smoked lychee, and dries down to charred cedar, birch tar and ambergris. It ships in Summer 2027, in a single batch of 300 numbered bottles.

The story

Smoky Magma was born on the night a volcano broke through the sea. We imagined the air above the new island: ash still falling, salt crusting on black rock, steam that smells of struck matches. It is the first breath of land that did not exist the day before.

Most summer perfumes are made of citrus and sea breeze. Smoky Magma takes the opposite side of summer: the heat that comes up from the ground, the stone that burns your feet at 40 degrees, the smoke that hangs in the air after a fire on the beach.

Top notes: ash, salt and pink pepper

The opening of Smoky Magma is dry and bright. Volcanic ash gives a mineral, almost powdery smoke; black lava salt adds a sharp edge, the way salt air catches in the throat.

Pink pepper is the spark on top. Despite the name, pink pepper is not a true pepper: it is the berry of Schinus molle, a relative of the cashew, with a rosy, fruity fizz instead of the heat of black pepper. In Smoky Magma it is the flash of red in the ash.

Heart notes: sulphur, basalt and smoked lychee

The heart of Smoky Magma is where the volcano lives. A sulphur spring accord gives the struck-match note of a geothermal pool, hot basalt brings the smell of stone in the sun, and smoked lychee keeps it from becoming harsh with a sweet, juicy smoke.

This middle stage lasts for hours on the skin. It is the part people notice when you walk past: warm, smoky and slightly sweet, like a fire made of fruit wood.

Base notes: cedar, birch tar and ambergris

The base of Smoky Magma is built to last into the next day. Charred cedar gives dry wood, and birch tar, the same material that gave Russian leather its smell in the 19th century, gives a dark, leathery smoke.

Ambergris holds everything together. Real ambergris forms in the gut of a sperm whale and changes over years at sea, as sunlight and oxygen turn its odourless ambrein into the warm, salty, skin-like smell perfumers prize. Smoky Magma ends there: smoke, salt and warm skin.

Who it is for

Smoky Magma is for people who want a smoky perfume in summer without wearing a winter scent. It works on hot evenings and in the city at night, and it is strongest on warm skin.

It is an eau de parfum of 100 ml at £316, made once, in a batch of 300 numbered bottles, and it ships in Summer 2027 to the people on its waiting list.
